Friday was Davy Crockett day in the house of delegates, MD general assembly. Nearly half of the delegation, 50+ people, were wearing those hats (what are they called) that are dead raccoons without face or legs. They bought one for Speaker Busch, who wore it throughout the entire session. And as they debated and passed bills (not really), the soundtrack "Daavveeee, Daaavvvvvyyy Crocket, king of the wild frontieerrr" played not so quietly in the background. Nothing got accomplished, but at least our democracy is fun! Is government like a sport? Where the fun of the game should, I think, outweigh the winning? Or like Marxism, where the end product isn't the concern but rather the humanity that is saved during the work process? Or going for hike, its about enjoying a walk, not running towards the towaring cathedral that marks the end destination youve been striving towards for weeks. Or the Buddhist proverb, wash the dishes for the simple pleasure of washing the dishes. It goes on and on. Where do we draw the line and why?
